Hawaii’s Woodshow prefers all wood components be sourced from Hawai’i-grown trees, however, use of imported woods should be minimal and have relevant importance to the composition of the piece:

  1. a) As accent or trim. NOTE: Entries deemed to have excessive non-Hawai’i grown content may be rejected. Woods should be minimal and have relevant   importance to the composition of the piece.
  1. b) Where use of wood is traditional–as spruce for a guitar soundboard;
  2. c) Or as substrate – such as MDF or plywood.

All entries, except by special invitation, must be for sale.

Artists need to complete a W9 tax form so that a 1099 can be generated should your artwork sell. Completed W9s can be emailed to chris.hfia@hawaiiforest.org

Artists may submit up to FOUR entries.  Entry fees are non-refundable, with one exception: entry fees will be refunded upon jurors’ exclusion of a submission for the exhibition.

  1. Entries must be freestanding, self-supporting, or submitted for judging and display with hardware for hanging and installation instructions for the volunteer staff. An unusually large entry must disassemble and reassemble easily, and entrant must be present at a specified time, if notified, to assist with installation.

A 35% commission is assessed by HFA on all entries sold through the exhibition to help defray production costs. Entries should be priced with this commission in mind. HFA will add GET at 4.712% to the sales price. Entrants are responsible for paying GET on items sold (minus HFIA commission).

All entries must remain on display for the duration of the exhibition which will end at 6pm, Saturday, August 29.

Shipping of sold entries is the responsibility of the entrant in agreement with the buyer.

HFA and Downtown Art Center (DAC) will not be liable for damages incurred to individual entries. Participation is the risk of the Entrant. Entrants can minimize risk by self-insuring and careful crating if shipping from a neighbor island or out of State. While HFA makes every effort to handle every entry with care, the Entrant signature required on the entry form serves as acknowledgement that the Entrant indemnifies HFA and DAC against damage or loss incurred in any phase of handling. Entry Forms will not be accepted without a signature.

HFA covers the cost of shipping to and from neighbor islands to O’ahu. To ensure the best handling of your work, enclose photo of the piece in the crate, and detailed instructions for re-crating.

Contact Diane Evans to make necessary arrangements. Shipping to outside of Hawai’i is not covered by HFA.

Entrants are required to serve as a docent one shift per accepted piece, to designate someone to fill this requirement in their place, or to pay a non-refundable no-sit fee per accepted piece of $60 for O’ahu entrants and $35 for Neighbor Island entrants.

All work must be able to fit within a doubledoor opening (approx. 50″

width x 70″ height). Hanging pieces and any work with unusual installation requirements will need pre-approval. Entrants must be available to assist with oversized and/or heavy items. If you have any questions or concerns about the above, you MUST contact Diane Evans so the installation crew can determine installation possibilities. The sooner we know about your work, the easier it will be to accommodate it.

The La‘au Pono Award considers the selection of Hawai‘i-grown woods, the application of materials and the entry’s ability to exemplify the inherent value of Hawaii’s la‘au and forest resources of the past, present, and future. Artists must submit a statement documenting their interpretation of la’au pono from source to finished product, including use of responsible practices and materials, and explain how their entry and creative process honor Hawaiʻi’s woods and forest resources.
